Gaining Access To Our Cores

1. Becoming a Member or a User

“Members” of our Center are PIs who have applied for and been accepted as IDDRC investigators. “Users” are investigators or lab members who use our fee-for-service cores. Users who are not members are required to pay higher service fees and are not guaranteed priority access to our services.  To apply for membership in our Center, click here.

To use any of our fee-for-service cores, you need to register as a user by doing the following:

  1. First, you establish a user name and password, and identify your PI, project, and admin. Click here to start the process.
  2. Next, we contact your PI and administrator for billing authorization. We notify you when the process has been completed.
  3. After authorization is complete, you then log back in as an authorized user to book services.

Note: There is no need to become a user unless you intend to use core services that have associated charges. Separate accounts must be established for each User-PI-grant-core combination when fees will be charged.

2. Arranging for Physical Access to our Scientific Core Facilities

Our Basic Science Core Facilities (Cellular Neuroscience, Proteomics Imaging, and Transgenics) are located in the Center for Life Sciences building at 3 Blackfan Circle.   Our Genetics Core facilities (Molecular Genetics and Cell Sorter) are located in the Enders Building (320 Longwood Avenue). Core Managers work with our Administrative Core staff to arrange for proper access.

Contact personnel for our Cores are as follows.

  • Proteomics: Judith Steen, Judith.steen@childrens.harvard.edu
  • Cellular Neuroscience (Histology): Marcin Liana Marcin.Liana@childrens.harvard.edu
  • Imaging: Lihong Bu, Lihong.Bu@childrens.harvard.edu
  • Transgenics:  Tam Thompson, Margaret.Thompson@childrens.harvard.edu
  • Molecular Genetics: Hal Schneider, hschneider@enders.tch.harvard.edu

To access the Enders Building, you can obtain a 24-hr pass from the Security personnel who are stationed in the Enders lobby. Access to the CLS Building requires advance security clearance which can be arranged through the Core Lab Managers.  Users not based at CHB will need to obtain a CHB ID badge for after-hours access. Bear in mind that getting a CHB ID involves a visit to our HR office and a health screen at our Occupational Health Service. The process can take several days.

3. Booking Core Services

Core Managers will provide you with basic instructions on how to arrange for services and how to use the online scheduling features of our website that are contained within our Core microsites.  When applicable (e.g., in our Imaging Core), special training sessions will also be arranged for specific pieces of equipment you plan to use.
